Carole Coffman
The mystery and beauty of the Native Americans have always fascinated
award-winning artist Carole Coffman. Growing up in the heart of the
Rocky Mountains, she shared friendships and the love of mother earth
and her animals with many of her Indian school mates, and remembers
hearing the sound of their drums as they held their ceremonies.
Although she has researched the history and culture of Native Americans,
it is the contemporary Indians who are her models. She explains, "Their
culture is very much alive and an on-going challenge. Their tribal elders
have lovingly preserved traditions and beliefs. You can see it in the
ceremonies and pow-pows still going on today." About her style Carole
says, "Pure realism is boring to me, so I guess you could say my paintings
are romantic realism. An idea will take root in my mind and I will allow
it to incubate until it is clear and ready to go on canvas. Sometimes
this can take up to a year. When it is finished it carries a part of my
soul. I do not fully understand why I paint the Indian people. I only
know it is my heart, not my mind that guides the brush."
