Penni Anne Cross (Alawa-sta-we-ches)
Washington native Penni Anne Cross is one of the country's most gifted
and popular Indian portrait artists. Her first exposure to art came
through her mother, herself an accomplished portrait painter. Penni
Anne began to earnestly study art in 1968 and soon her burgeoning talent
combined with her love for the Crow Indians allowed her to develop a
style of painting that is deeply sensitive and instantly recognizable.
She has continued to commit her life to her Crow people as well as to
her art in a way that gives all who view her work as a special glimpse
into the souls of those she portrays. Penni Anne, whose Crow name
"Alawa-sta-we-ches" means "Travels the Good Road," currently works
and lives in Montana.
