Larry Fanning
Larry Fanning is a wildlife and western artist whose work is rich with
emotion, communicating the passion and spirit of his subjects. On
travels that range the length of the American West, he uses camera
and sketch pad to preserve ideas which he later completes in his mountain
studio in Evergreen Colorado. His canvases shine with the purity of
nature, whether in the eyes of a wolf or the tender bond shared by
mare and foal. Describing his strong attraction to the West he ways, "In
its richly endowed land, its wildlife, and in the dreams of its people,
there pulses an energy that is sacred and life-giving." Given the accuracy
of his color management and his use of beautiful mood-provoking tones,
it is surprising to learn that Fanning is colorblind. He relies heavily
on what his mind perceives to substitute for what his eyes cannot see.
Although Fanning never sought formal art instruction, he began his career
as an illustrator for the Boeing Company in 1958. He advanced into the
mainstream of commercial art and graphic design during the 1960s.
Following his move to california in 1962, he temporarily set aside his
career in art to pursue a growing interest in spiritual philosophies and
ecological endeavors. As a result of his new awareness, his paintings
now reflect an increased sensitivity to the beauty and significance of
all living things and a new appreciation for the splendor of life.
