Judy Larson
Art has always come naturally to Judy Larson, but this talented artist
still works hard at it. In fact, Judy chooses to work with a most
demanding medium--scratchboard. It's a technique that she's mastered
only through years of practice. Judy grew up in an artist family and
found special inspiration from her father, a professional illustrator.
She received a bachelor's degree in Commercial Art and then spent the
next seventeen years as a commercial artist, illustrator, and art
director. Judy now makes fine art a way of life. Today Judy has
developed quite a following thanks to her unique scratchboard depictions.
The exacting and little-used technique of scratchboard is an ancient
craft and requires meticulous patience. A thin layer of China clay
is applied to a board, and the subjects--Judy loves working with horses
and wildlife--are outlined with black India ink and then sketched with
chalk. Judy engraves her images with X-Acto blades and colors them
using an airbrush, gouache, or acrylic. Her final pieces are brilliant
displays--fine examples of what natural talent and just plain hard work
can produce.
